It's one of the most common questions families ask us: "What's the best job for someone with a disability?" It's a fair question, and it usually comes from a good place. Families want their loved one to find work that feels meaningful, safe, and lasting.
The honest answer is that there isn't one best job. The best job is the one that fits the person: their strengths, their interests, the setting where they do their best work, and the support they need to succeed. This guide walks through how to find that fit, step by step.
What Is the Best Job for a Person With a Disability? How to Find the Right Fit
Why "best" depends on the person
Step 1: Start with strengths and interests
Step 2: Think about the work environment
Step 3: Explore job ideas by strength
Step 5: Know that accommodations are okay to ask for
Disability is not a job category. Two people with the same diagnosis can thrive in completely different roles. One person might love a busy, people-focused job where every hour is different. Another might do their best work in a quiet space with a clear, predictable routine.
Lists of "top jobs for people with disabilities" can be a helpful starting point, but they can also box people in. Starting with the person, not the label, leads to better matches and to jobs people actually want to keep.
Sit down together and talk through a few simple questions. There are no wrong answers.
What do you enjoy doing, even when no one asks you to?
What are you good at? What do friends or family ask you for help with?
Do you like working with people, with your hands, with information, or with ideas?
What tasks feel tiring or stressful?
What would make you proud to tell someone about your job?
Write the answers down. Patterns usually show up quickly. Someone who loves organizing their room, sorting cards, or keeping lists might enjoy inventory or office work. Someone who lights up around people might enjoy a customer-facing role.
The setting matters as much as the tasks. A great job in the wrong environment can feel overwhelming, while the right environment can make a challenging task feel doable. Consider:
Busy or quiet? Some people focus best with background activity; others need calm.
Routine or variety? Predictable tasks suit some people; others get bored without change.
Indoors or outdoors? Physical comfort affects energy and focus.
Team or solo? Some people love teamwork; others prefer working independently.
Schedule: Part-time or full-time, mornings or afternoons, weekdays or weekends.
Getting there: How will the person travel to work, and how long is the trip?
Once you know the person's strengths and preferred setting, you can start exploring roles. These are starting points, not limits:
Organized and detail-focused: inventory, filing, data entry, library or office support.
People-focused: greeting customers, hospitality, retail service, event support.
Hands-on: food prep, landscaping, maintenance, packaging, warehouse tasks.
Creative: crafts, design support, photography assistance, social media help.
Caring and patient: animal care, childcare assistant roles, community programs.
Try to think beyond the first idea that comes to mind. Many people are first offered entry-level retail roles, and those can be a great fit, but they're far from the only option.
Real experience is the best way to learn what fits. Job shadowing, volunteering, and short work experiences let a person test a role without pressure. After each try, talk about what felt good and what didn't. Every experience, even one that isn't a match, teaches something useful.
For students, structured programs like career camps can be a great place to explore. Our guide to career camps for students with IEPs in Florida explains how they work. Support from peers can help, too. Read how youth peer mentoring builds confidence before the first job.
A workplace accommodation is a change that helps a person with a disability do their job. Examples include a flexible schedule, written instructions, a quieter workspace, or assistive technology. People can ask for accommodations in their own words, and they decide whether to share their disability.
Strong soft skills help in every job: showing up on time, following directions, asking questions, and working as part of a team. Practicing them before the first day makes the first day easier.
Having someone in your corner during the job search, and after hiring, makes a real difference too. With Supported Employment, a job coach helps a person learn the job, settle in, and grow more independent over time.
If you're an employer reading this, the "right fit" works both ways. Matching a person's strengths to the right role leads to happier teams and better results. Learn how to partner with Better Steps as an employer.

"This camp truly helped me grow.I joined Season 4 of Better Steps Life Skills Camp, and it became such a meaningful experience for me. I learned practical lessons like budgeting and saving, but the most important thing I discovered was how to communicate with others. Before the camp, I didn’t like to talk at all — I was very shy and often kept to myself. Through the activities and encouragement from the staff and my peers, I slowly found my voice. Now I feel more confident in speaking up and sharing my thoughts. This camp truly helped me grow, and I would love to join again in the upcoming Career Camp with Better Steps Life Skills."

"It helped me take the first steps toward my future. At camp, I learned the importance of connecting with people. I had the chance to interact with new friends, build relationships, and work as part of a team. Before, I often felt nervous about making friends, but the camp showed me how much easier it can be when you share activities and goals together. I also began to understand what type of career I might want to pursue. This program gave me confidence and helped me take the first steps toward my future."

"I'm very thankful for everything. I have been part of the Life Skills Camp from Season 1 through Season 4, and every year has given me something new and valuable. I learned how to start a business and what it really takes to be an entrepreneur. I gained important business skills that I know I will use in the future. One of the biggest lessons I took away was about self-advocacy. Speaking up for myself was never easy, but the camp gave me the tools and confidence to do it. The most powerful thing I learned was discovering the career path I want to follow. That knowledge gave me direction and hope for my future. I am truly thankful for everything Better Steps has given me, and I would love to continue joining more camps."
