Goals give the day a direction. For adults with disabilities, the right goals build confidence, independence, and that proud feeling of "I did that." But knowing where to start can be hard. Should a goal be about work? Cooking? Making friends? The answer is usually "a little bit of everything," one small step at a time.
In this guide, we share 20 practical goal ideas grouped by life area, plus simple tips that help goals actually stick. Use them as a starting point, then adjust each one to fit the person, their interests, and the support they already have.
A vague goal like "be more independent" is hard to measure and easy to forget. A clear goal like "make my own breakfast three days a week" is easy to practice, easy to track, and easy to celebrate. Clear goals also help everyone involved, including family members, caregivers, teachers, and support staff, work toward the same thing in the same way.
Good goals usually have three things in common:
They're specific. They say exactly what the person will do.
They're realistic. They stretch a little, but they're within reach.
They matter to the person. When someone chooses a goal they care about, they're far more likely to keep going.
Daily living skills are the foundation of independence. If you're looking for more ideas in this area, our post on 15 Essential Independent Living Skills Examples for Teens & Young Adults is a great companion to this list.
Follow a morning routine using a picture or written checklist, with fewer reminders each week.
Make one simple meal, like a sandwich, eggs, or a bowl of cereal, without help.
Do one household chore every day, such as wiping the table, feeding a pet, or starting the laundry.
Set and use a phone alarm to wake up, take a break, or start a task on time.
Work goals build skills that carry into every part of life: showing up, following steps, and asking for help when it's needed. For adults who want to work in the community, Supported Employment can provide a job coach who helps along the way.
Practice a 30-second introduction for interviews, new coworkers, or new places.
Arrive on time for work or a program five days in a row.
Ask one question when unsure about a task, instead of guessing.
Learn one new job task step by step, then do it independently.
Money skills open the door to more choices and more confidence in the community. Start small and practice in real settings, like a grocery store or a coffee shop.
Pay at a store and count the change.
Use a simple weekly budget for snacks, outings, or fun money.
Save a small amount each week toward something meaningful, like a new game or a trip.
Read a paycheck or receipt and point out the key numbers.
Taking care of the body and mind is a skill, too. These goals help a person feel good and stay ready for the rest of the day.
Follow a personal hygiene routine with fewer reminders.
Take a short walk or move for 15 minutes most days.
Pack a healthy lunch for work or a program.
Name a feeling and use one calming strategy, like deep breaths or a short break, when stressed.
Friendships and community connections make life fuller. These goals help a person feel comfortable speaking up and getting involved.
Order food or ask for help in a store independently.
Join one community activity each month, like a class, club, or local event.
Call or text a friend to make plans.
Use a familiar route to get to a nearby place, with a safety plan in place.

Choosing a goal is the first step. Keeping it going is where the real growth happens. Here's what helps:
Start small. One or two goals at a time is plenty. Early wins build momentum.
Make it specific. Say what, when, and how often: "Make breakfast on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday."
Practice often. Skills grow through repetition in real settings, not just conversation.
Use supports. Checklists, pictures, timers, and reminders make goals easier to follow and easier to remember.
Let the person lead. Goals mean more when the person chooses them and can say why they matter.
Review and adjust. If a goal feels too easy, add a step. If it feels too hard, break it into smaller pieces.
Celebrate progress. Notice every step forward, even small ones. Progress looks different for everyone, and it all counts.
Families, caregivers, teachers, and support staff can all help by practicing the same goal in the same way. A quick weekly check-in works well. Ask two simple questions: "What went well?" and "What felt hard?" The answers keep goals realistic and moving forward, and they help everyone notice progress that's easy to miss day to day.
It also helps to write goals down where everyone can see them, like on the fridge or in a shared notes app. When the whole team knows the goal, every day becomes a chance to practice.

"This camp truly helped me grow.I joined Season 4 of Better Steps Life Skills Camp, and it became such a meaningful experience for me. I learned practical lessons like budgeting and saving, but the most important thing I discovered was how to communicate with others. Before the camp, I didn’t like to talk at all — I was very shy and often kept to myself. Through the activities and encouragement from the staff and my peers, I slowly found my voice. Now I feel more confident in speaking up and sharing my thoughts. This camp truly helped me grow, and I would love to join again in the upcoming Career Camp with Better Steps Life Skills."

"It helped me take the first steps toward my future. At camp, I learned the importance of connecting with people. I had the chance to interact with new friends, build relationships, and work as part of a team. Before, I often felt nervous about making friends, but the camp showed me how much easier it can be when you share activities and goals together. I also began to understand what type of career I might want to pursue. This program gave me confidence and helped me take the first steps toward my future."

"I'm very thankful for everything. I have been part of the Life Skills Camp from Season 1 through Season 4, and every year has given me something new and valuable. I learned how to start a business and what it really takes to be an entrepreneur. I gained important business skills that I know I will use in the future. One of the biggest lessons I took away was about self-advocacy. Speaking up for myself was never easy, but the camp gave me the tools and confidence to do it. The most powerful thing I learned was discovering the career path I want to follow. That knowledge gave me direction and hope for my future. I am truly thankful for everything Better Steps has given me, and I would love to continue joining more camps."
