Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
Are Vocational Rehabilitation benefits free for families in Florida?

Federal financial support programs help cover basic living expenses, housing, and food for individuals with physical, developmental, or cognitive disabilities:
Supplemental Security Income (SSI): A needs-based program providing monthly financial assistance to adults and children with disabilities who have limited income and resources.
Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI): Provides benefits to individuals with disabilities who have built up sufficient work credits through prior employment.
Ticket to Work Program: A free program offered by Social Security that allows SSI/SSDI beneficiaries to explore work opportunities without immediately losing their healthcare or monthly benefits.

Securing meaningful, competitive employment is one of the most powerful steps toward personal autonomy. State agencies offer fully funded vocational programs to help individuals gain job skills, land employment, and maintain long-term careers:
Career Counseling & Vocational Evaluations: Professional guidance to assess strengths, interests, and matching career paths.
On-the-Job Training (OJT) & Job Coaching: One-on-one mentorship and real-world workplace instruction provided directly at work sites.
Pre-Employment Transition Services (Pre-ETS): Specialized, 100% state-funded transition tracks for high school students (ages 14–21) with an IEP, 504 Plan, or documented disability.
Workplace Accommodations & Assistive Technology: Access to specialized equipment, software, and physical accommodations funded to support success in the workplace.
Independent living supports are designed to build daily living competencies and foster full community integration:
Daily Living Skills Instruction: Structured training covering meal preparation, personal hygiene, home maintenance, and budgeting.
Travel Training & Transportation Assistance: Programs that teach public transit navigation or provide transportation vouchers to access work and community events.
Self-Advocacy & Peer Mentorship: Empowerment programs teaching individuals how to articulate their rights under the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) and request necessary accommodations.

Beyond employment and daily life skills, several government programs assist with healthcare coverage and affordable housing:
Medicaid & Medicare: Comprehensive healthcare coverage covering medical appointments, therapy sessions, personal care assistance, and medical equipment.
Section 8 & Supportive Housing: Rental vouchers and specialized housing options tailored for low-income individuals with disabilities.
Tuition Assistance & Post-Secondary Support: Funding through Vocational Rehabilitation to assist with trade school or college tuition, books, and supplies.
Navigating state authorizations to unlock these benefits doesn't have to be confusing. In Florida, you do not need to pay out-of-pocket for quality life skills training and career preparation.
As an approved service provider, Better Steps Life Skills Center works directly alongside Florida Vocational Rehabilitation (VR) to deliver 100% state-funded programs with zero out-of-pocket expenses for eligible families.
Pre-Employment Transition Services (Pre-ETS): Tailored work readiness, self-advocacy, and job exploration for teens and young adults (ages 14–21).
Youth Career Camps: Hands-on seasonal workshops (Spring, Summer, Fall) focused on vocational learning and social integration.
Independent Living Skills & OJT Coaching: Practical, individualized instruction designed to transition classroom concepts into real-world independence.

"This camp truly helped me grow.I joined Season 4 of Better Steps Life Skills Camp, and it became such a meaningful experience for me. I learned practical lessons like budgeting and saving, but the most important thing I discovered was how to communicate with others. Before the camp, I didn’t like to talk at all — I was very shy and often kept to myself. Through the activities and encouragement from the staff and my peers, I slowly found my voice. Now I feel more confident in speaking up and sharing my thoughts. This camp truly helped me grow, and I would love to join again in the upcoming Career Camp with Better Steps Life Skills."

"It helped me take the first steps toward my future. At camp, I learned the importance of connecting with people. I had the chance to interact with new friends, build relationships, and work as part of a team. Before, I often felt nervous about making friends, but the camp showed me how much easier it can be when you share activities and goals together. I also began to understand what type of career I might want to pursue. This program gave me confidence and helped me take the first steps toward my future."

"I'm very thankful for everything. I have been part of the Life Skills Camp from Season 1 through Season 4, and every year has given me something new and valuable. I learned how to start a business and what it really takes to be an entrepreneur. I gained important business skills that I know I will use in the future. One of the biggest lessons I took away was about self-advocacy. Speaking up for myself was never easy, but the camp gave me the tools and confidence to do it. The most powerful thing I learned was discovering the career path I want to follow. That knowledge gave me direction and hope for my future. I am truly thankful for everything Better Steps has given me, and I would love to continue joining more camps."
