I am the President of Better Steps Foundation and CEO of Better Steps Life Skills Center, where I lead with a mission to empower individuals with special needs through life skills training, vocational development, and community engagement.
With over a decade of experience in healthcare and leadership, I have helped more than 500 individuals gain independence through employment, training, and supportive services.
Better Steps has grown to provide Medicaid-contracted programs, career camps for youth with IEP and 504 plans, and community events that have connected hundreds of families to valuable local resources.
I'm currently pursuing a degree in Psychology at Miami Dade College, which combines academic insight with real-world experience to build programs that make a lasting impact.

"This camp truly helped me grow"
"I joined Season 4 of Better Steps Life Skills Camp, and it became such a meaningful
experience for me. I learned practical lessons like budgeting and saving, but the
most important thing I discovered was how to communicate with others. Before the camp, I didn’t like to talk at all — I was very shy and often kept to myself. Through the activities and encouragement from the staff and my peers, I slowly found my voice. Now I feel more confident in speaking up and sharing my thoughts. This camp truly helped me grow, and I would love to join again in the upcoming Career Camp with
Better Steps Life Skills."
- Pia (Season 4)

"It helped me take the first steps toward my future"
At camp, I learned the importance of connecting with people. I had the chance to interact with new friends, build relationships, and work as part of a team.
Before, I often felt nervous about making friends, but the camp showed me how much easier it can be when you share activities and goals together. I also began to understand what type of career I might want to pursue. This program gave me confidence and
helped me take the first steps toward my future.
- Christian

"I'm very thankful for everything"
I have been part of the Life Skills Camp from Season 1 through Season 4, and every
year has given me something new and valuable. I learned how to start a business and what it really takes to be an entrepreneur. I gained important business skills that
I know I will use in the future. One of the biggest lessons I took away was about self-advocacy. Speaking up for myself was never easy, but the camp gave me the tools and confidence to do it. The most powerful thing I learned was discovering the career path I want to follow. That knowledge gave me direction and hope for my future. I am truly thankful for everything Better Steps has given me, and I would love to continue joining more camps.
- Jencarlos (Seasons 1 – 4)

In the heart of South Florida, a quiet revolution is happening in the workplace. It’s not about new technology or office trends—it’s about people. Businesses across Miami-Dade are realizing that an inclusive workforce isn’t just a social goal; it’s a competitive advantage.
As the 2026 Florida APSE Employer of the Year, Better Steps Life Skills Center has a front-row seat to this transformation. We work daily with incredible local businesses that look beyond a disability to see the talent, dedication, and unique perspectives of our participants.
If you are a job seeker with an IEP or 504 plan, or a parent wondering where your child might one day thrive, here is a look at the top inclusive employers and industries leading the way in Miami this year.
1. Hospitality & Tourism: The Miami Standard
Miami is world-renowned for its hospitality, and this industry remains one of the most inclusive sectors for individuals with unique abilities. Companies in this space value reliability, a friendly demeanor, and the ability to follow structured tasks—skills we emphasize heavily in our Career Camps.
Pinecrest Bakery: A local favorite and a previous Vocational Rehabilitation (VR) award winner, Pinecrest Bakery has shown a consistent commitment to hiring individuals from the disability community, proving that local roots grow the best inclusive practices.
Major Hotel Groups (Hilton & Marriott): Brands like the Hilton Garden Inn and Marriott properties in South Florida have long-standing partnerships with agencies like APSE and VR. They offer diverse roles from guest services to back-of-house operations where structured task analysis can lead to long-term success.
The retail sector in Miami-Dade has moved far beyond "simple" roles. Today, inclusive retailers are utilizing the high attention to detail and loyalty that many neurodivergent employees bring to the table.
Publix Super Markets: Often cited as one of the best places to work for people with disabilities, Publix has a legendary reputation for integration. They focus on "ability first," ensuring employees have the job coaching needed to master their roles.
The Home Depot: A frequent partner in Florida’s "Employment First" initiatives, The Home Depot provides excellent on-the-job training (OJT) opportunities for our youth transition students.
As the "Employer of the Year," Better Steps Life Skills Center is particularly proud of our partnerships with specialized businesses that go above and beyond.
Chartwells at the University of Miami: Their dining services have been recognized for creating supportive environments where students with disabilities can gain high-level culinary and service skills.
Rising Tide Car Wash (& Similar Social Enterprises): While technically in neighboring areas, the "Rising Tide" model has influenced many Miami entrepreneurs to build businesses around the strengths of employees with autism and other developmental disabilities.

Why These Companies are Winning (And Why You Will Too)
Inclusive hiring isn't just about filling a quota. The companies listed above—and the many others we work with at Better Steps—report several key benefits that help their bottom line:
Data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics consistently shows that employees with disabilities have higher-than-average retention rates. In a high-turnover city like Miami, having a loyal, dedicated team member is invaluable.
When you hire people who experience the world differently, you get a team that thinks differently. Neurodivergent employees often excel at recognizing patterns, maintaining high accuracy in repetitive tasks, and finding creative solutions to technical problems.
Miami is one of the most diverse cities in the world. When a business hires inclusively, its staff reflects its customers. This builds brand loyalty and shows that the company is truly a part of the Florida community.
How Better Steps Bridges the Gap
You might be wondering: How does a student go from a Career Camp to a job at a company like Publix or a Miami hotel? That is the "Better Steps" secret. We don't just hand someone a list of employers and wish them luck. We provide the Three Pillars of Support that these top employers value:
Job Coaching: We provide on-site support to ensure the transition is smooth for both the employee and the employer.
Task Analysis: We help the employer break down job duties into clear, manageable steps that match the employee's learning style.
Environmental Assessment: We make sure the "vibe" of the workplace matches the sensory and social needs of the student.
The 2026 Outlook: A Call to Miami Business Owners
Winning the Florida APSE Employer of the Year award was a high honor for us, but the real reward is seeing the "Employer of the Year" spark in other local businesses.
If you are a business owner in Miami, South Miami, or Homestead, we invite you to join this growing list of inclusive leaders. Hiring through Better Steps means you get:
Pre-Screened Talent: Students who have already completed our rigorous work-readiness training.
Tax Incentives: Guidance on the Work Opportunity Tax Credit (WOTC) and other Florida-specific incentives for hiring individuals with disabilities.
Ongoing Support: We are your partners for the long haul. If challenges arise, our job coaches are a phone call away.
Conclusion: Finding Your Place in the Miami Workforce
The 2026 workforce is more inclusive than ever before. Whether it's a local bakery or a global hotel chain, the doors are opening for individuals with unique abilities.
At Better Steps Life Skills Center, we are proud to be the key that unlocks those doors. Our mission is to ensure that every teen and young adult in our program has the skills to stand tall and say, "I am ready to work."
