"This camp truly helped me grow"
"I joined Season 4 of Better Steps Life Skills Camp, and it became such a meaningful
experience for me. I learned practical lessons like budgeting and saving, but the
most important thing I discovered was how to communicate with others. Before the camp, I didn’t like to talk at all — I was very shy and often kept to myself. Through the activities and encouragement from the staff and my peers, I slowly found my voice. Now I feel more confident in speaking up and sharing my thoughts. This camp truly helped me grow, and I would love to join again in the upcoming Career Camp with
Better Steps Life Skills."
- Pia (Season 4)

"It helped me take the first steps toward my future"
At camp, I learned the importance of connecting with people. I had the chance to interact with new friends, build relationships, and work as part of a team.
Before, I often felt nervous about making friends, but the camp showed me how much easier it can be when you share activities and goals together. I also began to understand what type of career I might want to pursue. This program gave me confidence and
helped me take the first steps toward my future.
- Christian

"I'm very thankful for everything"
I have been part of the Life Skills Camp from Season 1 through Season 4, and every
year has given me something new and valuable. I learned how to start a business and what it really takes to be an entrepreneur. I gained important business skills that
I know I will use in the future. One of the biggest lessons I took away was about self-advocacy. Speaking up for myself was never easy, but the camp gave me the tools and confidence to do it. The most powerful thing I learned was discovering the career path I want to follow. That knowledge gave me direction and hope for my future. I am truly thankful for everything Better Steps has given me, and I would love to continue joining more camps.
- Jencarlos (Seasons 1 – 4)

While many students spent their recent Spring Break away from the books, a dedicated group of young trail-blazers across Florida chose a different path. Last month, Better Steps Life Skills Center Inc. hosted our highly anticipated March 2026 Spring Career Camp, and the results were nothing short of inspiring.
From our 5-day immersive sessions at Miami Dade College Homestead to our intensive 4-day workshop in Tallahassee, these vocational sprints were designed to bridge the gap between high school life and professional independence. As a 2026 Florida APSE Employer of the Year, we took our mission to the next level, proving that with the right "Better Steps," any student can unlock their professional potential.
This wasn't just a "sit and listen" camp. Our March curriculum was built on four core psychological and vocational pillars: Self-Awareness, Self-Advocacy, Self-Efficacy, and Self-Determination.
We kicked off the week by helping students look inward. Many teens with disabilities are frequently told what they can't do; we flipped the script. Through environmental assessments, students identified their sensory preferences and workplace strengths. By mid-week, our participants weren't just "students"—they were aspiring coders, administrative assistants, and hospitality professionals who understood their own value.
One of the most powerful moments of the March camp was our session on disclosure and workplace accommodations. We taught students how to talk about their needs without feeling like they were asking for a "favor." Learning to say, "I work most efficiently when I have written checklists," or "I need a quiet space for my regulation breaks," is a professional power-move. Our students left with the script they need to succeed.
Self-Efficacy is the belief in one’s own ability to complete tasks and reach goals. During our 5-day Homestead intensive, this pillar was put into practice through Certified CPR Training. Mastering a high-stakes, technical skill like CPR provided an immediate boost in confidence. When a student realizes they have the skills to save a life, the "fear" of a first job interview starts to vanish. They aren't just hoping for a job; they know they are capable of holding one.
The final pillar is the ultimate goal: the ability to make choices and manage one's own life. In both our 4-day Tallahassee sprint and our Miami sessions, we focused on goal-setting and the "Internal Locus of Control." We moved beyond basic instructions and asked students to lead. Whether it was navigating the MDC Homestead campus to find Room B-205 or planning a mock budget for their first paycheck, students practiced being the primary transition agents in their own lives.

Our Tallahassee cohort engaged in a focused, 4-day intensive that prioritized leadership and corporate insights. A major highlight was the visit from our guest speaker, Mrs. Brenae Alford, Executive Assistant at Capital City Bank.
Mrs. Alford provided our students with an "insider’s look" at the corporate world. She spoke about professional presence, the value of reliability, and how a major financial institution views inclusive hiring. For many of our students, seeing a high-level executive speak so passionately about their potential was the "lightbulb moment" of the week, moving the conversation from "How do I get a job?" to "How do I build a career?"
Hosting our Miami cohort at Miami Dade College (MDC) Homestead (500 College Terrace | B-205, Homestead, FL 33030) provided an authentic collegiate and professional atmosphere.

A standout feature of our 5-day Homestead program was the inclusion of Free
Certified CPR Training. In 2026, a CPR certification isn't just a life-saving skill—it is a massive resume booster that makes our students more competitive in the job market.
Workplace Safety: Students learned how to respond to emergencies, a critical skill for the hospitality and healthcare sectors.
Skill Mastery: Mastering a technical, high-stakes skill like CPR significantly boosted our students' confidence.
You can’t have a career without understanding the paycheck. In both Miami and Tallahassee, we dedicated significant time to Financial Literacy and Budgeting.
We didn't just talk about money; we practiced with it:
Reading a Paystub: Understanding taxes, Social Security, and where the money actually goes.
Budgeting for Independence: Using digital tools to plan for rent, groceries, and transportation.
The ABLE Advantage: We educated families on the 2026 Florida ABLE United updates, showing them how to save their future paychecks without affecting their state benefits.
Many parents ask why we pack so much into a few days. The answer is Immersion. When a student is surrounded by peers and mentors focused entirely on growth, the "fear of the future" starts to dissolve.
By the end of the March camp, we saw a massive spike in Self-Efficacy. Students who were too shy to speak on Monday were leading group presentations by the end of the week. This isn't just "training"; it's a transformation that happens when the environment matches the ambition.
The March Spring Career Camp was a resounding success, but it is only one step in a lifelong journey.
Connecting with Vocational Rehabilitation (VR): For many, this camp was their first authorized Pre-ETSexperience. We are now working with Florida VR counselors to ensure this momentum continues.
Summer Work Experience (SWE): Many of our Spring graduates are already eyeing our Summer 2026programs. While Spring is about readiness, Summer is about experience. We are currently matching students with business partners for paid on-the-job training.
Q: My child missed the March camp. When is the next one? Our Summer 2026 Career Camps are currently open for registration! These are longer programs that include real-world work placements.
Q: Is there a cost? As an authorized vendor, most students attend through Vocational Rehabilitation (VR)funding. If your teen has an IEP or 504 Plan, they likely qualify at no cost to you.
Q: Can we still get the CPR certification? Our Homestead location specifically included this for March. Contact our office to see which certifications are included in our upcoming Summer sessions!

The March 2026 Spring Career Camp may be over, but the confidence our students gained will stay with them forever. They left with resumes, bank account plans, and—at our Homestead campus—life-saving CPR certifications.
