"This camp truly helped me grow"
"I joined Season 4 of Better Steps Life Skills Camp, and it became such a meaningful
experience for me. I learned practical lessons like budgeting and saving, but the
most important thing I discovered was how to communicate with others. Before the camp, I didn’t like to talk at all — I was very shy and often kept to myself. Through the activities and encouragement from the staff and my peers, I slowly found my voice. Now I feel more confident in speaking up and sharing my thoughts. This camp truly helped me grow, and I would love to join again in the upcoming Career Camp with
Better Steps Life Skills."
- Pia (Season 4)

"It helped me take the first steps toward my future"
At camp, I learned the importance of connecting with people. I had the chance to interact with new friends, build relationships, and work as part of a team.
Before, I often felt nervous about making friends, but the camp showed me how much easier it can be when you share activities and goals together. I also began to understand what type of career I might want to pursue. This program gave me confidence and
helped me take the first steps toward my future.
- Christian

"I'm very thankful for everything"
I have been part of the Life Skills Camp from Season 1 through Season 4, and every
year has given me something new and valuable. I learned how to start a business and what it really takes to be an entrepreneur. I gained important business skills that
I know I will use in the future. One of the biggest lessons I took away was about self-advocacy. Speaking up for myself was never easy, but the camp gave me the tools and confidence to do it. The most powerful thing I learned was discovering the career path I want to follow. That knowledge gave me direction and hope for my future. I am truly thankful for everything Better Steps has given me, and I would love to continue joining more camps.
- Jencarlos (Seasons 1 – 4)

Last week was a monumental moment for the entire team at Better Steps Life Skills Center Inc. We are beyond thrilled to announce that our organization was officially recognized as the Employer of the Year by Florida APSE (Association of People Supporting Employment First).
Receiving this award on February 27, 2026, at the annual Florida APSE conference was not just a win for our company—it was a win for the mission of inclusive employment across the state of Florida. This recognition honors our "exceptional commitment to promoting inclusive employment practices by hiring, supporting, and empowering individuals with disabilities."
For those who may not be familiar, APSE is the only national organization with an exclusive focus on integrated employment and career advancement for citizens with disabilities. The Florida chapter is a powerhouse of advocates, employers, and vocational rehabilitation specialists dedicated to the "Employment First" philosophy.
Winning an award from Florida APSE is a high honor because it is judged by peers and experts who understand the complexities and rewards of disability employment. Being named Employer of the Year means that Better Steps is being held up as a model for other businesses in Miami and throughout Florida to follow.
Our journey to that stage last Friday began years ago with a simple belief: that a disability should never be a barrier to a meaningful career. At Better Steps, we don't just talk about inclusion—we live it.
The award ceremony was a beautiful reflection of the community we’ve built. Seeing the "Employer of the Year" certificate projected on the big screen, proudly presented to Better Steps Life Skills Center, was a humbling reminder of the hard work our staff and participants put in every single day.
We were represented at the conference by our leadership team, who accepted the award with immense pride. One of the most touching moments was seeing the certificate held high—a physical symbol of the lives changed through our vocational programs and career camps. The atmosphere was electric, filled with other Florida-based organizations all working toward the same goal: making the Florida workforce accessible to everyone.
Inclusive employment is more than just a "nice" thing to do; it is a vital part of a thriving economy. In Florida, thousands of talented individuals with disabilities are ready and willing to work but often face systemic barriers.
By winning this award, Better Steps is proving that:
Diversity is a Strength: Employees with disabilities bring unique perspectives, creative problem-solving skills, and high levels of loyalty to their roles.
Support Systems Work: With the right job coaching, task analysis, and environmental assessments, any workplace can be an inclusive one.
Community Impact is Measurable: When we empower individuals to earn their own paychecks, we decrease dependency on social systems and increase the self-worth and financial independence of our neighbors.
The Florida APSE recognized Better Steps specifically for how we hire, support, and empower. This aligns perfectly with our organizational "Three Pillars" that we utilize in all our training and vocational programs:
We don't look at a diagnosis; we look at a person’s potential. Our hiring practices are designed to be accessible, ensuring that every applicant has the opportunity to showcase their true skills.
Hiring is just the first step. We provide ongoing support through job coaching and workplace accommodations. This ensures that the employee doesn't just start a job, but builds a career. This award recognizes our dedication to that long-term success.
Through our Career Camps and life skills training, we empower individuals to advocate for themselves. We teach them their rights under the ADA and give them the tools to navigate the social and technical aspects of a modern Florida workplace.
While we are celebrating this incredible "Employer of the Year" win, we know our work is far from over. This award serves as fuel for our future projects.
In the coming months, we are expanding our outreach to more Miami-based businesses to show them the benefits of inclusive hiring. We want to share the "Better Steps" secret with every employer in Florida: that hiring people with disabilities isn't just about social responsibility—it's about smart business.
Part of our mission to stay "Employer of the Year" quality is our commitment to the next generation. Our upcoming Spring and Summer Career Camps are already in the works! These camps are where the "Employers of the Future" are born. If you are a parent of a teen with an IEP or 504 plan, this award is a testament to the quality of training your child will receive with us.

We want to extend a massive thank you to Dr. Terri Morse, FL APSE President, and the entire Florida APSE board for this recognition. We also want to thank our community partners, the vocational rehabilitation specialists we work with, and—most importantly—our participants.
You are the reason we do what we do. Your resilience, your talent, and your success are the real "awards" we celebrate every day.
Are you a local Florida business owner looking to make your workplace more inclusive? Or are you a parent looking for award-winning support for your teen or young adult?
